World Health Day 2023
This World Health Day, we are focusing on what it means to be truly well. But a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about eating well. It isn’t just down to getting enough exercise and movement. It isn’t just about sleeping well. It isn't just about being a good space psychologically. It’s when we tie all of these things together, that we experience true health and vitality.
The Importance of Nutrition
Eating a healthy diet is all about vitality - it’s about supplying your body with all of the essential nutrients it needs to function properly. Supplying your body with the right nutrients looks like eating a well balanced and varied diet, eating mostly whole foods, and including all 5 of the food groups (fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy & proteins) to include all micronutrients. The body also requires all macronutrients, being quality carbohydrates, lean protein, essential fats, as well as proper hydration and fluids.
The Importance of Sleep
We all know how much sleep affects our energy and mental health - but it actually is just as important as nutrition - it also affects much more. If you’re not sleeping well, it can be impossible to focus on and improve other aspects of your health – such as movement, mental health and nutrition. Just like your legs need rest after an intense workout, your brain needs rest after a long day. If you're struggling to get a good night’s sleep, there are so many small steps you can take to make an improvement. A big one is reducing your blue light exposure (scrolling) at night, so swap instagram for a book to help you fall into a slumber easier.
The Importance of Movement
Your body loves moving! Start by simply moving more throughout your day - take the stairs, park further away from your destination and walk, get up and take a walk around the office every hour. Actively exercising 30 minutes per day improves your heart, immune and brain health and more. Exercise also has positive effects on things like blood pressure, bone health, energy levels plus improves your mood.
The Importance of Mental Wellness
Practising mindfulness or meditation is taking the world by storm at the moment, and for good reason. Prioritising your mental health is just as important as your physiological health. Relaxed mental downtime is so important for helping anxiety, depression, insomnia, pain and even high blood pressure. Just 5-10 minutes of mental stillness per day is all you need to start seeing the benefits.
