Eating Seasonally: Why It's So Important!
It’s no coincidence our lives are so closely intertwined with nature. We ebb and flow through life - through birth, to life, to death - just like nature does! Learning how to eat and live seasonally is just that - living in a harmonious balance and pace with the changing seasons throughout the year. Just like we change our clothes to adapt to the seasons, we too should consider changing up our grocery lists to support our nutritional needs!
Ever wondered why certain foods are only available during certain times of the year? Changing your food with the seasons ensures our bodies are properly nourished throughout the year by eating the best of what each season brings. Mother Nature knows just what our bodies need throughout each season of the year. By tuning into the natural circle of life, we can find ourselves adjusting to the natural pace and pattern of the world around us while increasing our overall well being and vitality.
Let's explore why eating seasonally is so important.
1. IT'S IN SYNC WITH MOTHER NATURE AND SUPPORTS OUR BODY'S NATURAL NUTRITIONAL NEEDS
Oranges are abundant in winter - they are packed full of Vitamin C and during the colder months, our bodies need the extra support. Watermelon screams all things summer - because the temperature has risen and our bodies need the extra hydration. Pumpkins and sweet potatoes during winter? They’re hearty, warming and nurturing for the bodies during the cooler season. It’s no coincidence. These foods grow naturally and abundantly during these certain times and feel much more natural for us to eat.
2. IT'S CHEAPER!
When we eat foods that are in season, that food is usually at its peak supply (because it is naturally more abundant). They will usually be more affordable foods bought out of season - a good pointer is to keep an eye out on its country of origin. For example, I saw an Asparagus with “Product of Mexico” - think about it. It’s been grown on the other side of the world, packed, stored, put on a ship and has made its way to our shelves. Foods that are naturally “out of season” are more expensive due to storage costs, transportation and reduced supply.
3. IT SUPPORTS LOCAL FARMERS
Talking to your farmers at the local farmer’s market is a great way of learning what is in season and supports all their hard earned harvest. It’s been grown with so much intent, love, packed and shipped right to you. Supporting the local farmers, supports Australian growers. If you’re shopping in a supermarket, keep an eye out for country of origin signs and choose “Grown in Australia” where possible.
4. IT TASTES BETTER
Produce that is in season looks brighter, tastes better/tastes sweeter as it has been freshly harvested. Choosing produce that is only available at specific times of the year, allows it to ripen naturally, giving a more nutrient dense fruit or veggie and tastes so much better!
5. IT'S BETTER FOR THE PLANET
By eating seasonally, the demand for out of season produce would decrease, and so would transportation, refrigeration, greenhouse gasses and not to mention the waste of produce! Eating locally and seasonally works WITH nature… not against it. Eating seasonally supports yourself, the community and the planet.
