How To Get Back Into Routine After A Wellness Slump
Whether you’re reading this after the holiday season, or perhaps you’ve just gone through a bit of a rut, here are some tangible, actionable steps you can take to help you get back into routine after a “wellness slump.”
Before we get into it, please know, just like the seasons, we all experience different seasons in our lifetime and it’s completely normal (and okay) to jump off the bandwagon. Life happens, unexpected situations arise - we have all become so accustomed to the hustle culture, comparisonitis and making sure we are doing “all of the things” day in, day out. Please give yourself some love, some grace and some compassion, that you are after all, a human, navigating through this experience as best as you possibly can.
START SMALL
If you’re like me, it’s so easy to jump in with an all in or nothing mentality. But when you’re already feeling sub-par, it’s easy to become really overwhelmed and throw in the towel completely. I encourage you to start small, and slowly build on that momentum.
- Pick one wellness thing to focus on each week
- So you want to join the 5am club? Start by waking up 30 minutes earlier than your usual wake up time and slowly go from there
- Want to run 5km? Slow and steady wins the race
- Can you go to sleep 30 minutes earlier?
- Read for 10 minutes per day or 10 pages
PRIORITISE SLEEP
If there’s one thing I tell my clients to focus on above anything else when starting out on their wellbeing journey, focus on sleep. Just focus on sleep. Everything is just so much easier and better with adequate amounts of sleep.
Our bodies go through so many biological processes when we sleep (hormone regulation, detoxifications, memory, cell regeneration to name a few), so prioritising sleep is absolutely paramount.
Need help with your morning routine? What’s one thing you can do in the morning that you look forward to?
Need help with your evening routine? Start by reducing screen time 1-2 hours before bed. Disconnect and watch your deep sleep improve drastically. Naked Harvest's Moon Mylk will also help you get a deep, more restful night's sleep.
TAKE INVENTORY ON YOUR WORKOUTS
Are you going to a gym you don’t really love? Do you workout because you have to? Running but you really want to try more yoga and pilates? Now is the perfect opportunity to take inventory on your current workout schedule.
Find a workout you actually love - moving your body should come from a place of love, intention and reverence towards your body. To feel good, to increase your energy, not to hate or punish yourself. Finding a workout you truly enjoy will help you achieve your goals a whole lot quicker and you’re more likely to stick to them.
EAT THE RAINBOW
I get it - food and buying groceries can be overwhelming. It’s just one other thing on your list to do. Plus, how much more fun is it to order Uber Eats? Requires little effort and less time.
This used to be me also. Until I romanticised the whole process. Grocery shopping is now one of my most sacred times and my most favourite things to do every week! I feel so accomplished, excited for my meals and I know I am showing up for my future self and setting myself up for success.
I now go to an Organic Market every Sunday and have made the most beautiful connections with the market sellers. I know where my food is coming from, I trust my source and I love the process - I choose to go by myself because this time is so special to me!
And when you think about it, all of this beautiful, colourful food will make up my DNA and cells for the next week. It will provide me with the energy I need to do all the things I love, it will heal my body from the inside out, and ensure I am resting and recovering as best as possible. Isn’t that wild to think?
By being prepared, organised and having delicious, beautiful, colourful food in the house, you set yourself up for better choices and to put yourself in a positive mind frame. Plus, you don’t have to leave the house for another week. Win win!
